Your Pre-Conception Checklist
Twelve gentle, science-backed steps to nourish and prepare your body before conception.
In the earliest weeks you often won't yet know you're pregnant, yet this is exactly when your baby's foundations are being laid. Starting a few months ahead means you're already nourished, balanced and ready when conception happens. Ideally, begin these changes at least three months before you start trying.
Start Folic Acid Early
Take 400 mcg of folic acid every day, from 2-3 months before conceiving until you're 12 weeks pregnant. It lowers the risk of neural tube defects like spina bifida. Higher-risk women may be prescribed 5 mg.
Eat A Fertility-Friendly Diet
Build meals around whole grains, dals, seasonal vegetables, fruit, nuts and ghee. Add iron- and folate-rich foods like spinach, beetroot and lentils, plus vitamin D (10 mcg/day) to build strong reserves.
Aim For A Comfortable Weight
A healthy weight supports regular ovulation. Aim for a BMI of 18.5-24.9, and note that for Indian bodies, 23+ is already considered overweight. Even small, steady changes help.
Move Gently, Daily
Aim for about 150 minutes of moderate movement a week, brisk walks, yoga, cycling. Regular activity improves fertility, but avoid extreme workouts, which can disrupt your cycle.
Cut Back On Caffeine
Keep caffeine under 200 mg a day, roughly two cups of coffee or three of tea. High intake is linked with lower fertility, so swap the rest for herbal or fertility teas.
Quit Smoking & Tobacco
Smoking and tobacco, including gutkha, lower egg and sperm quality and raise the risk of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy. Quitting benefits both partners and is one of the highest-impact changes you can make.
Avoid Alcohol
Alcohol lowers fertility for both partners and has no known safe level in pregnancy. Since you may conceive without knowing right away, it's safest to stop completely while trying.
Rest Well & Manage Stress
Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep and protect your calm with pranayama, meditation or a steady daily routine. Chronic stress raises cortisol, which can interfere with ovulation.
Support Hormones Naturally
Encourage regular cycles with Ayurvedic herbs, warm nourishing food and a consistent daily rhythm (dinacharya). Our Uterus Detox Oil & Happy Hormone Tea are formulated for exactly this.
Track Your Fertile Window
Your fertile window is the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day, with the 2-3 days before ovulation the most fertile. Ovulation usually falls about 14 days before your next period.
Book A Pre-Conception Check-Up
Ask your doctor to check thyroid, haemoglobin/iron, blood sugar, vitamin D and rubella immunity. Catching and correcting these early smooths the path to a healthy pregnancy.
Review Conditions & Medicines
If you have PCOS, thyroid, diabetes or another condition, get it well-managed before conceiving. Never stop or change any medication without your doctor's advice.
A Note For Partners
Fertility is a two-person journey. Sperm take about 90 days to fully mature, so your partner's diet, weight, alcohol, smoking and heat exposure (hot baths, laptops on the lap, tight clothing) matter just as much. Changes he makes today show up in roughly three months, which is why couples benefit most when both prepare together.
